Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a public policy came into effect on August 20th, 2020, that would allow visitors in Canada to apply for a change of status from within Canada. This change of status allows visitors to become employer-specific workers. Generally, according to Immigration regulations, a visitor may not apply to change their status to a worker or student from within Canada. Before the 20th of August 2020, applying for a study or work permit would require the applicant to be outside of the country – unless they are already working or studying in Canada.
This public policy was set to expire on February 28th, 2023, which would evidently make it very difficult for current visitors and tourists in Canada to take advantage of potential job offers in Canada.
IRCC has now announced that they are extending the public policy for another 2 years as they have seen tremendous value and response from current visitors and employers.
This public policy is very important for internationals who are looking for jobs in Canada. Generally, it is very difficult to convince an employer to hire you if you are in your home country as there are a lot of hurdles to pass before obtaining all the authorizations to work. Obtaining a visitors visa and coming to Canada as a tourist will allow you to meet potential employers and will also expedite the process of obtaining an employer-specific work permit once a job offer is obtained. Most candidates do not understand the importance and value of obtaining a visitor permit as it is the first step in opening up your doors to obtaining Canadian citizenship!
